Once again, Zillow has updated it's estimate for 15800 Halekala Hwy. And yet again, it's more good news for anyone interested in this parcel of land in Maui. Current estimates peg the value of this property at $754,500; a 3.2% value increase equaling a net gain of $23,500, in the span of just a month! Maui property statistics are increasingly exhibiting a rebound effect in the Maui real estate market, particularly with properties like 15800 Haleakala Hwy. As has been said countless times before, this really is just an "effect" as real estate prices on the whole here have been quite resistant to the national downward trends of most other states.

According to the rather helpful on-line real estate site Zillow.com, who packages data for homes nationwide into easy to read reports for sellers and buyers alike, this parcel of Maui real estate, as of this writing, has an estimated value (Zestimate in Zillow speak) of: $719,500 (see:

Zillow creates their estimates based on a myriad of factors, from comparables to past solds as well as their own proprietary formulas, thereby creating, in my opinion, a reliable picture of the true worth of this Maui property (in fact, I believe 15800 Haleakala Hwy. is actually worth more than their estimate, due to the property's enormous potential). Water water water

Getting a water meter in Upcountry Maui has been an issue for many years. Typically, one would have to wait years to receive a water meter on their Kula property, thereby holding up the construction of their Upcountry Maui home. Thankfully, 15800 Haleakala Hwy. does not have this problem, as it's water meter has been operating for quite some time now!

The long sunny days of summer are just about over, giving way to the long sunny days of winter! As many well know, the seasons on Maui meld seamlessly into one another with only a hint of change: a few more showers in Fall, a little more sun in Summer, a cooler breeze in Spring, small changes to an overall calm and enjoyable environment. So while many other places in the world are gearing up for wind chill and snowy weather, in Maui you get ready for another day of sun and sand! Right now the temperature at 15800 Haleakala Hwy. is hovering around a very comfortable mid 70's to low 80's, lush greenery gleaming under the sunny blue sky . . . just another typical day, be it fall, winter, summer, or spring, in Upcountry Maui!

Best of all these two great schools are only a 5 minute drive from your new Maui home at 15800 Haleakala Hwy. !!

When it is time for your child(ren) to attend middle school, you'll have three convenient choices for schooling in Upcountry Maui:

Kalama Intermediate School, in Makawao, about 15 minutes from your Kula, Maui property. A public school that picks up where Kula Elem leaves off, for 6th-8th grade students.

The aforementioned Haleakala Waldorf School and . . .

Seabury Hall; a private institution not far from Kalama Intermediate, but in a much more secluded area amongst tall eucalyptus trees and rolling hills. Accepting 6th through 12th graders, Seabury is held in quite high regard for it's academic standards.

For the final four years before college, there are two Upcountry options for your high-schooler(s); Seabury Hall, or King Kekaulike High School. Like Seabury Hall, King Kekaulike sits about 15 minutes downhill from 15800 Haleakala Hwy, at the intersection point of Kula and Pukalani.

Of course, in addition to the above traditional schooling methods, there's also the option of home schooling your child from your new home in Maui. Take a look at the Hawaii Home School Association's website for a wealth of information regarding that option.

As you can see, there are many schooling options for your child in Upcountry Maui, it's just a matter of picking the right one for your family!

Looks like Longs Drugs is coming to Upcountry Maui!

A staple in the Hawaii community for 54 some odd years now, Longs Drugs has always been much more than just a place to get a bottle of aspirin. Need some Kleenex? Go to Longs. How about a bag of rice? Longs has it. A rice cooker to make it with? Yep, Longs has that too. How about Nyquil or multi-vitamins? Longs and Longs. Longs Drugs is one of those great places where you can grab just about any everyday item quickly and at a good price. Best of all is their customer service: most all Longs employees I've come across have been quite nice and helpful with any questions I may have. According to a recent article in Pacific Business News, Longs will soon be serving the Upcountry Maui community with a new location in the recently built KulamaluTown Center. Scheduled to open in early 2009, this new Longs Drugs will be a freestanding, 16,000 sq. ft. large store, built with green principles in mind; a photovoltaic system rated to produce 150k kilowatts of electricity per year, and construction utilizing various recyclable materials. Very nice.

This new Longs will be a welcome addition to the to this community, adding convenience for those of us with Upcountry Maui homes - including those with a future Maui home at 15800 Haleakala Hwy. ;)

Nighttime in Kula

One HUGE benefit of living in Upcountry Maui are the typically cool, clear, calm, and quiet nights. Throughout the years I've traveled through the empty roads of Kula many many times, enjoying the cool mountain air and clear night skies. The evening air becomes particularly nice in the area of 15800 Haleakala Hwy., where a multitude of open space brings the sweet scent of flowers wafting through. While enjoying these wonderful scents, glance to the sky and you will discover a brilliant view of the stars surrounding you. Up here, star gazing is truly wonderful as this serene Kula neighborhood combines little to no distracting environment lights with crystal clear night skies, creating a virtual theater of constellations, planets, and shooting stars. In fact, on occasion rocks entering the Earth's atmosphere streak across the sky over Haleakala Crater like a burning comet. While just an illusion, these marvelous shooting stars seem close enough to reach out and catch! While taking in the beautiful stars, it is not uncommon to see silent winged silhouette float into view; an elegant owl on the prowl for a field mouse. Follow his descent and you may catch a pack of spotted deer roaming the many rolling hills of Kula. Look on as they walk further downhill towards Pukalani and witness the beauty of Maui at night; roads, homes, and businesses light up the island from the South Shore into Central Maui; making for an eye catching contrast to the shadowy calm of Upcountry.

Sights like these truly make Upcountry Maui a special place to live.

The Road Leading to Your Upcountry Maui Home

Upcountry Maui has many endearing features; a cool climate, breathtaking views of the island, quiet neighborhoods, and . . . fun roads?!?

That's right, a rarely mentioned feature of the Upcountry Maui landscape are it's great to drive roadways. Serene and typically devoid of traffic, the roads leading to and from 15800 Haleakala Hwy. are a joy to drive. Haleakala Highway in particular is a joy to drive. Stretching from below sea level and running well past 15800 Haleakala Hwy. (all the way to Haleakala Crater, at about 10,000ft.), Haleakala Highway starts off as a relatively straight shot up the mountain until about the 1500ft. level, just above the town of Pukalani. It's at this point that the Highway changes from multi-lane straight and boring, to two lanes smoothly snaking up and down the mountain slope. Here the climate changes; warm air becomes a cool breeze and miles of sugar cane gives way to beautiful rolling hills. Amongst these hills you will find a multitude of curves, a few quick left right lefts, and even the occasional switchback on your climb upwards. Through much of your journey, the Highway runs alongside the mountain, giving way to a view of the island so clear that you will want to pull over to take it all in. On a good day, you can even see the islands of Molokai and Lanai framing the West Maui Mountains. As you progress upwards, a small gathering of quaint Maui homes lead you through a lush tree dotted landscape straight to 15800 Haleakala Hwy.

Haleakala Highway is the prefect drive to and from your Upcountry Maui property; morning, noon, or night there is always beautiful scenery on display, all the more enjoyable from the cockpit of a performance sedan or coupe!

Taken in the Upcountry Maui town of Makawao, at about 1000-1500ft. below the area where 15800 Haleakala Hwy. is located; views like these are a common sight around the Upcountry Maui area!

Water, the resource most essential to sustaining human life. Without it lush landscapes become barren deserts, inhospitable to most life, including humans. While Kula is about as far from a barren desert as you can get, it unfortunately might as well be for some Upcountry Maui real estate owners. For years, current and potential residents of the Kula area have had to undergo a rigorous process to get water flowing to their property via a residential water meter. Due to various issues, many many property owners in Kula (we're talking multiple hundreds, possibly 1000+ by some accounts) have had to endure a strenuous wait to get water on their land. Most in fact have been waiting for YEARS, and are still waiting. Those whom have just recently landed on the list are just as likely to be waiting years as well, making building their Maui dream home a bit of a nightmare. After all, you can't have a dream home with no running water can you? So why do I bring this up?
